Chicago Wildlife Education: Getting Rid of Vultures

Birds nesting in your garden can become quite a nuisance. They are harmless enough when they are small and cute, vultures are less appealing. Turkey vultures, in particular, are becoming a huge problem for homeowners. In some neighborhoods, they have caused thousands of dollars’ worth of damage. They are large birds and can cause damage to the tiles on your roof when they land on it. They are not solitary creatures and tend to live and feed in packs. They also regurgitate some of what they have ingested. If you think that pigeon poop is a problem, wait until you see what your deck looks like after a flock of vultures has been there. These birds not only defecate on your lawn but they also projectile vomit when they feel threatened. The vomit smells terrible and is enough to turn your stomach.

What do they eat?
Vultures are not invading your property in search of food. They are attracted to the decaying flesh of other animals. They usually find these next to large highways in the form of roadkill. Large groups of vultures will descend in order to get their fill. If an animal has died close to your property, your home may be a resting place. If they keep coming back, it is clear that they are not there because of the food. Either way, you should make sure that you seal your garbage cans properly as discarded meat will attract them. BBQ grills should also be cleaned well after use or be moved inside. The residual meat on them may entice a vulture or ten to come and have a look.

Getting rid of them
Vultures are protected by federal law, meaning that you cannot kill or displace them. Your best course of action would be to scare them away with a loud noise, like an air horn. Once they have left your property, you can then proceed to make it less inviting. One of the best ways to do this is to use bird netting. It can be installed over trees, lawns, and homes. It prevents the birds from landing. You can also use it to close off your porch and deck. You can install a motion active sprinkler system in the area where they are roosting. They are scared of water. If you have the patience, you can wait until they appear and squirt them with a garden hose. If this seems like too much effort, get a machine that will do it for you. Motion active sprinklers with squirt a jet of water at the offending vulture when it triggers the sensor.

Calling the professionals
If you have tried all of the above-mentioned deterrents and you still have vultures in your yard, you may want to contact a professional. Wildlife removal experts deal with these situations on a daily basis. Chances are that you are not the only person in the area who is having this problem. They will have a lot more experience than you.
